Jewish is more than just a religion. It was a people, like Vikings. There were prophecies that a Messiah would come and save the world. Jesus is that Messiah. He died for our sins and rose again. His own people rejected him, though, and those that followed him became Christians.
[ Athelstan doesn't actually know this answer for sure but he gives the best answer that he can. ]
I believe so, perhaps to differing degrees of devotion like Vikings as well.
[ Athelstan has not really met many Jews to make any more affirmative of a statement. ]
The Messiah is the deliverer of the Jewish people in their religious texts. There were many prophecies that he would come. Jesus Christ is that Messiah but they do not believe he is the one.
[ Athelstan smiles, because he can't help it. Sometimes Ragnar's confusion as he tries to understand things is sort of cute, like a child trying to figure out a new puzzle. ]
Christ was crucified by the Romans. He died for our sins so that we could be forgiven. [ whether the video feed catches what he's looking at or not, athelstan's gaze turns down toward the scars on his palms. Something in him aches that Christ gave himself for him and yet he could not find himself fully devoted. How weak is he? ]
After three days, he returned to life and left his tomb. He stayed among his followers, teaching for a little while longer before ascending back into heaven until it is time for him to come to Earth again.
[He still didn't really understand what a Messiah was or where people were being delivered to, but he left it at that. The crucifixion also made about as much sense as it had before. He wasn't sure how dying had done anything for anyone else's sins or who was doing the forgiving. God maybe? Athelstan seemed to mostly ask his god for forgiveness... but...]
If he died so you would be forgiven, then why must you always ask for forgiveness again? [He shook his head a bit, that 'your god is so strange, priest' smile on his face again.]
He stayed among his followers after dying? Did he look... dead? [He wrinkled his nose a bit.]
He did not die so that everyone is free to live wickedly as they choose. His blood pays for our sins but it is still by believing in him that we are saved. [ There's a lot that Athelstan hasn't spoken of yet. Perhaps, one day he and Ragnar can go over want of the gospels together and the book of Acts. If they took it step by step perhaps it would be easier to understand than asking questions about pieces. Going through story by story at least Ragnar would be able to see that it was for Gentiles without having to really detail explain the whole concepts.
Athelstan is a monk, a transcriber and illuminator he was not someone who was trained to minister to unbelievers. Not that he wants to convert Ragnar but being able to explain it in a better way would be helpful. ]
No. He was alive but he bore the wounds of the cross, where they had nailed his hands and feet to it and a spear had pierced his side. There was one of his followers that doubted him and so Jesus had him touch the wounds and then he believed but he is forever known as the doubter because he had lacked faith to believe what he had not touched.

[His brow furrowed slightly.] What is Messiah? It means a son of a god?
Rose again? And how do you mean he died for 'our' sins'? He wanted... them? [Why was Christianity so frustratingly confusing?]
