Name: Athelstan
Canon: Vikings
Age: unstated, possibly late 30s
Appearance:

Canon Point: Season 3, Episode 5
Background: wiki

Personality:Loyal: One of Athelstan's most defining traits is his unwavering loyalty once it is won. He's had to choose between remaining with Christians in Wessex and returning with Ragnar. In Wessex, he was able to continue his religious studies, his art and translating other texts. He had also had access to more materials in secret from the King. However, he leaves all those things behind to go with Ragnar because in the end Ragnar is the one who had his loyalty. Athelstan is also loyal to his God, even when he feels conflicted over whether the Norse gods are also real. When he was captured in Wessex originally, he was crucified and on the cross he remained loyal, repeating Bible verses and praying even while under immense pain.

Educated: Athelstan was left to the Church young because his family couldn't afford another child. He traveled and spent his life studying religious texts. He was able to learn different languages and about different places that many in that time had never heard of. His education is a great strength for him because it is a large reason as to why he is curious and interested in learning about the Vikings and their culture as well as sharing his own-- a large reason that he's further endeared to Ragnar and his family which is what keeps him alive for so long. His intellect and open mind endear him to the King of Wessex and make him useful.

Compassionate: Athelstan is taken as a slave. He quickly is integrated into Ragnar's family, caring for his children and farm. With the genuine care Athelstan takes with them it's undeniable that it's more than a sense of duty. Additionally, it's also one of his biggest failings. When Judith confesses her sexual desires for him he wants to help her and comfort her. This eventually leads him to break his vows to have sex with her.

Trusting: Athelstan is very trusting. He doesn't seem to be able to see the worst in people. His trust often leads him to be naive. When he is first on Ragnar's farm, he tells him all about England and teaches him the Saxon language, only to be shocked that Ragnar uses that information to plan for further raids. While in Wessex, he insists that Ragnar and Ecbert can trust each other. He only sees the best in Ecbert and fails to ascertain how power-hungry he is. This leads to the eventual slaughter of innocent farmers.

Magnanimous: Athelstan is very generous in the way that Christian beliefs would teach. However, both his generosity and his ability to forgive others prove to be a weakness for him, especially in the Pagan world. He lacks any ruthlessness. There are those that he should be wary of and not forgive, like Floki, but he never bears them any ill will. He never assumes the worst of people and neither does he try to change anyone.

Moral Conflict: Throughout canon, Athelstan battles with trying to reconcile whether both his God and the Norse gods can be real. He sees proof of them both and it brings him quite a bit of pain. At the canon point that he is coming from, it is the lowest point in his conflict. He breaks his vows in Wessex and has sex with a married woman. He then leaves the Christian kingdom to return to live with Pagans. It's difficult and painful for him to try and reconcile between the two.
