Athelstan sighs because it feels as if Ragnar is still missing the point or perhaps is being deliberately obtuse about what he is trying to say. So he leaves the subject alone, perhaps things will work themselves out but knowing Ragnar it will be in the most painful and inefficient way for everyone but Ragnar.
"You would not have. If you want him, you will have him. Ragnar, I know you too well," he says softly. "I need it to not matter. There is enough to bear without that." He carries it anyway but not admitting it helps, he thinks.
His voice is even quieter, almost a murmur, perhaps more to himself and wishing that Ragnar wouldn't hear the words that wouldn't stay inside, as he says, "I knew there would always be someone else, I just thought it would be a woman."
